It is that day of the year the harvest festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated throughout the country. The arrival of spring is a cause for cheer as the cold days will soon be over. It is also the day when thousands of kite fliers launch their kites in the sky and compete furiously against each other. As simple as the joy of kite flying can be it becomes one of the deadliest sports for birds. The manja or the thread used for flying kites inadvertently injures innocent birds and at times is even fatal. The arrival of the Chinese manja which is made up of nylon with a higher tensile strength causes even more damage than the cotton variant. It is also not biodegradable and remains in the ecosystem for a long time. This Sankranti, as you fly your kites we hope that your kites soar higher than ever but also that you celebrate it responsibly.
Avoid Chinese manja at all costs. Remember it is not just the strength and sharpness of the sword that wins the battle, it is the skill of the warrior.
Don’t chase kites: Discourage children from chasing kites that drift over open spaces including railway tracks. This could be fatal.
In case you find injured birds in your vicinity, follow the steps below.
1. Pick up the injured bird using a cloth, not your hands
2. Clean the wound and place it in a shoe box
3. Feed it glucose and water
If possible, call up the nearest rescue centre in your area – if possible hand over the bird safely at the centre or request the volunteers to come fetch it. Several organisations come together over these few days to save and treat the injured birds.
